Department of Critical Care Medicine

The Department of Critical Care Medicine at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Pune is one of the few academic departments of its kind in the country.

The department runs a closed ICU with support from a multidisciplinary team from all the academic departments. It is one of the few academic institutes with simulator-based learning in mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, and ACLS.

Vision

To provide the most modern services in various aspects of Critical Care Medicine to patients at an affordable cost.

To have publications of international and national standards.

To organize national and international level conferences.

A three-year DM course in Critical Care Medicine is likely to take off in the near future.

D. M. (Critical Care Medicine) will be started soon.

1 Year fellowship course in Critical Care Medicine running from 2019 till date. 6 seats approved.

Clinical Services Provided

  • A 15-bedded general-purpose ICU (planned to expand to 30 beds) for adult patients
  • Bedside bronchoscopy
  • Bedside echocardiography
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy at the bedside
  • Bedside percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy

Departmental Out-Reach Services

  • Assessment, advice, and transfer of critically ill patients to the ICU
  • Airway assessment and management
  • Placement of central venous lines / Hemodialysis Catheters
  • Advice regarding parenteral nutrition of patients

A follow-up clinic is running in the department every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday to ensure follow-up of the patients who are discharged from the ICU.

DYP ICU is having round the clock intensivist cover who are qualified and experienced. Spacious cubicles for each patient is made for the better care of critically ill patient. Each trained nurse looks after the 2 critically ill patient. ICU is well equipped with traditional and modern equipments. All beds in the ICU are backed up by high end ventilators – both invasive and non invasive type. ICU has in house hemodialysis and CRRT facilities. Bed side x-ray machine and 2D Echo /USG machine help in point of care.

Simulation based mechanical ventilation workshop – SIMVENT was conducted on 25th and 26th May 2019. CME on Brain death And Organ donation was organized by the department on 13th November 2019. Faculties, Residents and nursing staff of various departments took part in the CME and had an interactive session with the panelists and speakers. Simulation based hemodynamic monitoring conducted on 6th and 7th December 2019. Eminent speakers of national repute from premier hospitals across India taught the delegates regarding various variables involved in the physiology of hemodynamics and also discussed various clinical scenarios involving hemodynamic alterations.

Department of Critical Care Medicine successfully treated 223 critically ill Covid patients in ICU. As compared to national survival rate, our department survival rate was better as 173 patients got discharged alive. (BSD) Brain Stem Dead Donar multiorgan donation programme running under ZTCC successfully.
